Windows hosting is a type of hosting where websites run on the Microsoft Windows Server operating system and the IIS web server. It is chosen for sites built with Microsoft technologies such as ASP.NET, .NET Framework and Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL). Open-source technologies such as PHP, MySQL and WordPress usually run on Linux hosting.
In this article we explain the differences between Windows and Linux hosting, when to choose which, and alternatives for Windows-based applications.
Windows Hosting vs Linux Hosting
| Windows hosting | Linux hosting | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server | Linux (e.g. AlmaLinux, CloudLinux) |
| Web server | IIS | Apache, LiteSpeed, Nginx |
| Languages | ASP.NET, .NET; PHP can also run | PHP, Python, Node.js, Perl |
| Database | MSSQL (mostly), MySQL | MySQL / MariaDB, PostgreSQL |
| Control panel | Plesk | cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin |
| Licence cost | Usually higher because of the Windows Server licence | Low or no operating system licence cost |
| Typical use | ASP.NET sites, apps using MSSQL | WordPress, e-commerce, PHP sites |
Which One Should You Choose?
The choice depends on the technology you use, not on your computer's operating system. Using Windows on your PC doesn't mean you need Windows hosting.
- Choose Linux hosting for: PHP-based software such as WordPress, Joomla and OpenCart; MySQL databases; ready-made site installs. The vast majority of websites fall into this group.
- Choose a Windows-based solution if: your site is written in ASP.NET Web Forms, ASP.NET MVC or classic ASP, or your application depends on MSSQL.
Note: modern .NET (ASP.NET Core) applications can also run on Linux. Ask your developer which .NET version your project uses.
An Alternative for Windows Applications: Windows Server VDS
Using a Windows Server VDS instead of shared Windows hosting gives you more flexibility:
- You install IIS, MSSQL or any other software you need yourself.
- Besides your website, you can run accounting software, business automation or desktop applications 24/7.
- You manage it over Remote Desktop (RDP) just like your own computer.
In return, server maintenance and updates are your responsibility. We explain how a VDS works in What is a VDS.
What Options Does ViHyper Offer?
- Linux hosting: our web hosting plans are Linux hosting running on cPanel, CloudLinux, LiteSpeed and Imunify360. They suit PHP and MySQL sites, WordPress and e-commerce software.
- VDS for Windows: ViHyper does not offer shared Windows hosting. For projects that need Windows Server, you can choose Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016 or 2012 when ordering a VDS plan. The server is ready in 2–3 minutes via the automated setup panel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WordPress run on Windows hosting?
It can, but since WordPress is designed for PHP and MySQL, it is far more common, and usually smoother, on Linux hosting.
Is Windows hosting more secure?
Security depends more on updates, configuration and the software you use than on the operating system. Both platforms are secure when managed properly.
Can I switch from Linux hosting to Windows?
If your site uses PHP and MySQL, there is usually no need to switch. If you are moving to an ASP.NET application, you can move to a Windows Server VDS.
Can I use cPanel on a Windows VDS?
No, cPanel only runs on Linux. Plesk is the usual web panel on Windows servers.
